Bagpipers, in the main, have to be hardy souls. From the mire of Flanders fields to the more hostile quarters of Twickenham, history has taught them to endure rain, mud, bullets and brickbats. But nothing, it seems, compares to the pain of getting your mouthpiece rammed against your teeth when you are playing on the back of a camel, and your beast trips over a sand dune …

… McCallum Bagipes, a bagpipe manufacturer from Kilmarnock, has come up with something that flexes as the camels sway graciously across the sands. Stuart McCallum, a director of the company making the camel-friendly pipes, said: “I was amazed when I got the request, but I designed the device using computer technology.

“It’s a flexible plastic tube that bends as the camel moves and can be adjusted in length, depending on how tall the piper is. There’s a padded bit on the tip as well for extra comfort.”

Bagpipe Notation software for a Windows PC, looks pretty nice, I will download a trail copy and review it.

FROM THE CEOLMOR-SOFTWARE.COM PRODUCT PAGE

“PiobMaster 2.3, pronounced “PEEBMASTER”, Piob in Gaelic is “bagpipe”, is a WYSIWYG application, where the composer initially defines the music structure with a simple user interface. i.e. Time signature, How many Parts etc..etc… The user then has the ability to “drag and drop”, notes, doublings and embellishments from their palettes onto the stave. Notes can be “Grouped, “Dotted”,”Cut” or “Tied” by simply selecting them and pressing the appropriate button.

The composer then has the option of hearing their composition being played back through their PC’s own sound system. An integrated sound toolbar containing buttons for playing, stopping, pausing, forwarding, rewinding and setting the tempo, give full control to the user for sound playback.

There is also no need for operational or tutorial manuals, as PiobMaster is so simple to use. However an integrated online Help facility is available to the user if and when required. Both Importing of BMW format tunes and output to wave file options are available form the File menu. For independent reviews click here

If deciding to purchase the CDROM version, please note that the CDROM has to be in the drive when initiating the software. ”

Introduction:

Far from being a simple practice chanter, Master Gaita ® is a simple but powerful tool that lets to use the bagpipe fingering to get into and control the MIDI universe, and also to open new ways faced to the learning of bagpipe technique and music. When connected to a computer with its own program, you can, not only to play with any instrument’s sound but also perform with traditional bagpipes’ sound. This is done by using recorded and prepared samples to get a quite near reality sound. The control of the sound volume lets the performance at any time during the day without worring about posible disturbs that the bagpipe loud sound might produce.

The instrument is strongly made on a PVC tube with nine extremely sensitive tactile devices, so only the smooth contact of a finger resting on any of them is needed to activate them. A semi-rigid cable and a little plastic box make the chanter to get firm in a fixed and confortable position as if it were in its stock. A 2.5 meter long cable leaving the plastic box carries the MIDI singnals to the computer or sound module the Master Gaita is connected to.
